Summer Swim Lessons
The Park & Recreation Department offers summer swim lessons for the following levels. All swim lessons are held at the Memorial Pool,
located at 51 Smyrna Street Class size is limited. Please register early, for these classes will fill fast. Fee: $45 Residents $55 Non Residents

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills (minimum 4 years old)
Purpose - To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.
Objectives:
1. Opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged objects, 2 times (in shallow water)
2. Back float, 3 seconds
3. Treading using arm and hand actions (in chest deep water)
4. Combined arm and leg actions on front, 2 body lengths
Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Purpose - To provide students with opportunites for success with fundamental skills sucha as tread water and basic swim strokes.
Objectives:
1. Fully submerging and holding breath, 5 seconds
2. Front glide, 2 body lengths
3. Back float, 15 seconds
4. Combined arm and leg actions on fornt, 5 body lengths
Level 3 -Stroke Development
Purpose – Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water.
Objectives:
1. Headfirst entry from the side in a kneeling position (in water at least 9 feet deep).
2. Rotary breathing, 10 times.
3. Tread Water, 30 Seconds.
4. Front Crawl, 15 yards.
5. Elementary backstroke, 15 yards.
6. Scissors kick, 10 yards.
Fencing
Youth Introduction to Fencing
Introduction to the modern game of Olympic style fencing and its history. Covers fencing safety, fundamental techniques and tactics, and competition. The physical development process in this class starts with the student’s own gross motor skills and adds fine motor skills on top of those gross motor skills all in the context of interacting with others in an open-skill activity. This course assumes no prior experience in fencing. Includes warm-up games and exercises to improve agility, balance, eye-hand coordination, and tactical thinking. All fencing equipment is provided.

Teen Introduction to Fencing
Introduction to the modern game of Olympic style fencing and its history. Covers fencing safety, fundamental techniques and tactics, basic equipment troubleshooting and repair, and competition. The physical skills taught are the same as in the youth class, but in this class, there is an increased emphasis on the tactical aspects of the sport. This course assumes no prior experience in fencing. Includes warm-up games and exercises to improve agility, balance, eye-hand coordination, and tactical thinking. A variety of games that focus on the types of tactical and strategic thinking found in fencing will be included. All fencing equipment is provided.

An intensive, four-day camp for fencers with some prior foil or epee fencing experience. This camp will focus on technical skills development as well as developing an overall tactical framework. Considerable time will be spent in competitive and structured bouting. Fencers will be exposed to multiple competition bouting formats, including individual pool bouts, individual direct elimination. Also included will be lectures on tactical theory and sessions on equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Fencers should bring two changes of t-shirts, snacks, and lunch.

Course Descriptions
Young People's Sculpture: Exploring 3Dimensional Art. Students will create sculptures using a variety of 3 dimensional art media such as clay, papier-mâché and recycled materials. Lessons will be age approprate to strengthen and develope fine and gross motor skills for little hands.
Young People's Art #1, #2, #3: Students in this class will use a variety of art media that is age appropriate. Colorful and exciting projects will be made while learning about Art History and other cultures. From Paintings to papier-mâché, students will be engaged in the art process every minute.
Young People's Mixed Media: This class, geared for ages 5-7, will explore using different art media such as paint, clay, printmaking and drawing with a focus on animals as a subject matter. Students will have a chance to study their favorite animal/animals and create different workd of art using a medium of their choice.
Drawing: Important techniques will be the focus of this class; perpective, contour drawing and the use of shading will be taught. Students will also have fun drawing whimsical designs that teach about abstract art, cartoons and other cultures. Pencil, ink & charcoal as well as colored drawing tools will be implemented throughout the course of the class.
Mixed Media: This class, geared for ages 8 & up, will explore using different art media such as paint, clay, printmaking and drawing with a focus on animals as a subject matter. Students will have a chance to study their favorite animal/animals and create different works of art using a medium of their choice.
Printing / Airbrush: A combination of two great art mediums! Students will learn a variety of painting techniques using watercolor, tempera and acrylic paint. Students will also be introduced to basic airbrushing using an airbrush and compressor. Students will airbrush designs onto paper and fabric.
Creative Sculptures: Students will learn all about this 3Dimensional art form and its importance in making decorative and functional designs. Using a variety of materials such as papier-mâché, self-hardening clay and recycled objects, students will create and have fun!
Jewelry: This class will design jewerly with pre-made beads as well as hand-made beads they create with clay. Students will be encouraged to make jewerly sets, learn macramé, and use objects from nature that can be worn proudly!
