Fun Soccer
For Children & Their Parents!
Fun Soccer is a 4 week introductory program for children 3-5 years old with an emphasis on FUN not competition.
Happening Sunday Afternoons 4:00-5:00 pm at High School Front Field starting September 11th to October 2nd. Parents are required to stay with their children and take an active part in participating.
This Program is free & no pre registration is required.


Instructional Youth Volleyball
The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department is currently holding sign ups for the fall volleyball program for children who are entering Grades 3-8 in September 2016. The volleyball program is held at the W.S. Middle School Gymnasium on Thursday evenings. This 8-week program will teach rules, drills and skills necessary for the progression into playing games.

The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department, along with the Terriers Around Town, are pleased to offer Children’s Art Classes for children ages 6 & up. These art lessons will be held on Fridays at the UNICO Building, located in Mittineague Park, for five week sessions. The cost will be $30.00 per child and will include all supplies for water color and drawing. Local artists Joan Barnard, Sue Urban & Sue Newman will be the instructors. Class size is limited so please don't wait to sign up for this wonderful, fun-filled class!

Children's Art Classes

Aerobics & Yoga Classes
The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department, Creative Movement Dance Classes for children ages 5 & 6.
Classes will be held on Saturday Mornings at the UNICO Building, located in Mittineague Park, for five week sessions.
The cost will be $40.00 per child. Instructed by Katelyn LaValley.
This class is geared for age appropriate enjoyment while building on gross motor skills and developing dance concepts. This class works to develop the students' understanding of rhythm, coordination, improve self-esteem and confidence. Longer ac-tivities and exercises are used to aid in building a longer attention span and encourage self discipline.
Examples of activities: spatial awareness, exploring time with fast & slow movements, high & low, walking/running on balls of feet, chasses (gallops), skips, balance, hopping, jumping - in & out/2 feet & 1 foot, emotional expression, exploring shape concepts, animal character development, dance counts & musicality, rhythmic development.

Youth Football
The West Springfield Suburban Youth Football Associationsponsored by the West Springfield Park & Recreation Departmentwill hold sign-ups May 2nd until July 15th. Registration is open tochildren who are West Springfield residents or attend a *W.S.Public/Private School in the following grades.

Youth Cheerleading
The West Springfield Cheerleading Association sponsored bythe W.S. Park & Recreation Department is holding registrationfor girls & boys in Grades 3-8 as of Sept 1, 2016. Cheerleadingsquads consist of Pee Wees (3rd - 4th Grade), Juniors (5th - 6thGrade) and Seniors (7th - 8th Grade). Clinics will be heldApril 12, 13 & 14 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm in the W.S.High School Gym.
Practices are held Tuesday and Thursdayevenings beginning July 19th. Cheer season follows the WestSpringfield Suburban Youth Football schedule (games typicallybegin in Sept.).
We encourage at least one parent whose childis interested in cheering to attend the April 12th clinic withtheir child, even if your child has done cheerleading before.Registrations begin after attending clinic in April.

Open to NEW and RETURNING Participants.
Participants will learn new cheers, dance routines & jumps.
Learn about the time commitment & costs associated with WSYCA. What to wear: sneakers, no loose clothing, and no jewelry. Shorts & t-shirts preferred. Bring a water bottle with name on it.
It is MANDATORY for one parent to attend the April 12th Clinic, even if your child has participated in this program before, as waivers will need to be signed prior to participating.
Important Information will be communicated that first evening. Nights 1 & 2 will teach cheers and Night 3 will have fun evaluations & performances!
There is NO FEE for the Clinic.

In order to avoid being placed on the waiting list, registrations must be recieved by July 8, 2016.
Teams will be formed according to the child's grade entering into September 2016. Maximum age restrictions exist in each league. The Park & Recreation Department reserves the right to move participants who have reached their maximum age to the appropriate league.



The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department, Musical Theater Dance Classes for children ages 7 - 12. Classes will be held on Saturday Mornings at the UNICO Building, located in Mittineague Park, for five week sessions. The cost will be $50.00 per child. Instructed by Katelyn LaValley.
Musical Theatre class will focus on learning proper dance technique while exploring the various dance styles used in Broadway
shows. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with Broadway style jazz movement and includes a proper warmup,
stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations. Emphasis will also be placed on learning performance
skills such as connecting with the audience and telling a story through dance and facial expressions.
This fall we will be exploring excerpts from the Broadway Musical Legally Blonde! “A fabulously fun international award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde The Musical, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandalin pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Equal parts hilarious andheart-warming, this musical is so much fun it should be “illegal!”

Musical Theater Dance Class

The West Springfield Park & Recreation is pleased to offer children various nature activities. Come explore the natural wonders of Mittineague Park! This series of programs is designed for ages 6-12. Each session is led by an experienced environmental educator and involves discovery hikes and usually something to take home. Programs are three hours long and held at the UNICO Building, located in Mittineague Park.
Parents: Sign your kids up and get them outdoors to learn about and appreciate the natural world around us!
Adventures lead by Nancy Condon, Environmental Educator.
Adventure: RECYCLED BOAT RACE:
In honor of Grandparents Day on Sunday, bring your Grandma and
Grandpa to help you build a boat! Wood scraps, plastic bottles, aluminum
foil, and styrofoam are all materials that can float and be put
together with some tape and ingenuity. Bring a collection of used
items from home to add to the assortment of serviceable materials
provided. First we build, then we will take our creations to the
stream for a race to the finish! Prizes for the most ingenious boat
and for the race winner.
Note: Wear shoes that can get wet!

Adventure: TREES ARE TERRIFIC!:
This is the time of year when trees put on their color show and go
from green to red, yellow and orange. Let’s hike into the forest and
do some color experiments with the leaves, discover animals that
live in trees, play tree games, and collect seeds and nuts from trees.
We will make flour from acorns – the nuts of the oak tree. Bring a
snack of something that came from a tree and be ready to go for a
hike!

Adventure: LITTLE CREATURES ARE EVERYWHERE:
Let’s take our magnifiers and collection containers as we hike the
trails looking for tiny creatures. At this time of year they are hiding &
preparing for winter. We’ll look under logs, up in trees, in the ridges
of tree bark & in the soil for worms, spiders, beetles salamanders &
more. Be on the lookout for insects in all stages of life not only
adults, but pupa and larva too. Bring your sense of adventure and
dress for hiking and the weather.
Note: Equipment will be provided but bring your own if you wish.

Adventure: CUSTOMIZED HIKING STICKS:
If you like to go out in the woods, a hiking stick can be a useful thing.
It helps you cross streams & keep your balanced going over logs. Today’s
hike we will concentrate on looking for just the right stick for
your height. We’ll then take it inside and sand it and decorate it with
colorful duct tape, feathers, beads, and natural materials to make it
uniquely yours. Make more than one for gifts if you wish.
Note: 6 & 7‐year olds welcome accompanied by parent.

Nature Adventure Series



The West Springfield Park & Recreation is pleased to offerclasses in fencing. All courses below will be held at the UNICO Building, located in Mittineague Park. The cost per student will include all supplies. Students are to bring water bottle, wear sneakers, long pants (sweat pants are acceptable), and comfortable t-shirts.
Instructed by Taro Yamashita, coach at Riverside Fencing Club, and staff coaches from the Riverside Fencing Club.
YOUTH INTRODUCTION TO FENCING:
In this active, fun class, students will learn the basic techniques and tactics of the modern Olympic sport (with ancient roots) of
fencing. Starting with basic footwork and movement, students will progress quickly to basic bladework and tactics for attacking,
defending, and deceiving opponents. No prior experience is required.
